Returning a stolen statue - 22nd October 2021
A college in Cambridge is giving back a statue to Nigeria. The statue is of a cockerel. It's made of bronze. The British army stole the statue. They took control of Benin City in 1897. Benin City is in Nigeria.
In 1905, a student's father gave the statue to Jesus College. Now, the college is returning the statue to Nigeria.
The name of the statue is "Okukur." It's very important to Nigeria's culture. Sonita Alleyne is master of Jesus College. She said returning the statue was the "right thing to do."
The British took about 10,000 works of art from Benin City. Today, museums around the world have many of them.
In 2019, Jesus College promised to give back the statue. It was the first to do this. Nigeria hopes other places will return their statues too.
