Megalodon shark extinction - 22 August 2022
Scientists have a new idea about an old puzzle. Three million years ago, megalodon sharks all died. They went extinct. Scientists couldn't understand why.
The scientists studied old megalodon teeth. They studied teeth from the great white shark too. They found the same chemical in the teeth. Now, scientists think the megalodon died of hunger.
The chemical in the teeth is zinc. It shows the animals ate the same food. But maybe, there wasn't enough food for both animals. Megalodons couldn't get enough food.
Megalodons were very big. They were 18 metres long. The name megalodon means "big tooth". They needed to eat a lot. One megalodon was the size of three great white sharks.
Why megalodons disappeared is unclear. This new information is one part of the puzzle. But scientists have other ideas too. Changes in sea levels may be another reason.
