UN tries to stop huge oil spill - 1st August 2022
The FSO Safer is a big ship. It's in the Red Sea, Yemen. It's a 'supertanker'. It holds lots of oil - 1.14 million barrels. But it's got problems.
The FSO Safer's very old. And nobody's looking after it. That's because of the war in Yemen. The war started in 2014.
Now, the United Nations (UN) is worried. Soon, the supertanker will break into pieces. Oil will go into the sea. This will kill fish. And it'll bring problems to Yemeni people. Cleaning up the oil will cost $20 billion.
Now, the UN's raising money. It wants to take the oil off the supertanker. The job needs doing before winter. Then, the weather makes the job dangerous.
Taking off the oil is expensive. The United Nations needs $80 million. It needs it now. First, it asked countries to give money. But there still isn't enough. So now it's asking the public too.
