Scientists find new plants on Earth - 25th March 2024
Kew Gardens in London has lots of fantastic plants. It's a special botanical gardens. Its scientists look for new plants all the time.
Last year, they found 91 new plants. They looked all over the world, from Antarctica to Madagascar.
In Madagascar, they found a beautiful orchid. A special bird lives in the same area. Local people keep the area safe. They didn't know about the flower. The orchid was lucky. It lives in the same place as the bird.
Then there's a tree in Borneo. It has special flowers. Scientists were surprised. You can't see the flowers. They're under the ground! Local people already knew about the tree. They love eating its fruit.
New plants help us to understand our world. It's important to look for them. There are probably 100,000 more plants to find.
But some types of plant are dying. It's a race against time to find them.
