Grow your own teeth - 28th April 2025
Scientists are changing a visit to the dentist. They're growing teeth in a London laboratory.
In future, we may look after tooth problems in a different way. Dentists will use the person's cells. They'll grow into new teeth. These will be better than implants.
Many animals grow new teeth. But humans can't do this. The scientists found a way to change this.
Scientists worked for 10 years. They made a special material. This material helps cells talk to each other. One cell can tell another to become a tooth cell.
Now, the scientists have to answer another question. What's the best way to put a new tooth into someone's mouth? They can implant the young tooth cells in the mouth. Or they can grow the tooth in the laboratory and then implant it.
Scientists aren't just using biology to grow teeth. They're growing other body parts too. This could change the future of medicine.
