Fires burn Easter Island heads - 21st November 2022
Easter Island is far from anywhere. It's 3,700 kilometres from any coast. It's famous for one thing - its heads.
The famous heads are 2-20 metres high. But recently, there was a fire on the island. It damaged the heads. The island's mayor, Pedro Edmunds Paoa, feels angry. He says it wasn't an accident. Perhaps farmers started the fire.
The heads are in the island's national park. The park's important for the world. The local people lived there for one thousand years. No one came from outside. So nothing changed. The island's people built the heads in the 1200s.
The fire damaged the heads. It changed the faces. And now, the heads aren't strong. Some people say it's too late. But other people hope to save them.
A few months ago, the island opened to tourists again. Those tourists are lucky to see the heads. In the future, they might not be there.
