Power cut in Europe - 26th May 2025
There's a problem with power in Europe. Spain, Portugal and some of France had no electricity. The power cut started around 12.30 on 28th April. But how did it happen?
The big power cut started in south-west Spain. The lights went out. Phones didn't work. The internet stopped. Shops had to close.
Then, the rest of the country lost electricity. The trains stopped and people couldn't get home. At airports, planes couldn't take off.
In big cities, people went outside. They played games and talked to friends, or slept.
What was the problem? It wasn't a cyber attack. It may be the level of energy in the network.
Last year, 56 percent of Spain's energy was green energy. But the amount of green energy changes with the weather. This makes it harder to control energy levels in the network.
If that's the problem, it will cost three trillion euros to update Europe's electricity systems.
