New opportunities for Spain and Gibraltar - 27th July 2026

Life's now easier for people in and around Gibraltar. They don't need passports to cross the border. Spain and Gibraltar signed a special agreement. It removes the border fence after 118 years.

The UK owns Gibraltar. It's a port in the Mediterranean sea. 40,000 people live there. But 15,000 workers in Gibraltar live in Spain.

Brexit took Gibraltar out of the EU. This caused lots of problems. Border police had to do more checks. There were long queues.

People were often late to work. Shops waited a long time for products. Fewer tourists visited local Spanish towns.

Diplomats looked for a solution. The EU, Gibraltar, Spain and the UK worked together. After four years, they signed the treaty.

Gibraltar isn't in the EU. But now, its port and airport have Schengen border checkpoints. Workers in Spain and Gibraltar have the same rights too.

Britain still owns Gibraltar. Spain still disagrees with that. But its prime minister sees a future "full of opportunities".
