Hong Kong cows go hungry - A2

People help hungry Hong Kong cows - 17th February 2021

This is Grass Island in Hong Kong. Cows live on this island. The cows have a problem: They need more food.

Not many people live on Grass Island. Usually, there aren't many visitors to the island.

But coronavirus is changing things. People in Hong Kong can't go to other countries. Now, they are visiting Grass Island. This is a problem for the cows.

The cows eat grass. But visitors walk on the grass. This kills the grass. Now, the cows don't have much grass.

The visitors make a lot of rubbish too. The cows are eating the rubbish. This is bad for the cows.

But a group of people is helping the cows. The group's name is Lantau Buffalo Association. It takes grass to the island. It gives grass to the cows.

Jennifer Wai works with Lantau Buffalo Association.

Jennifer Wai: "We, we saw cows going to the bins and hunting for food. And we saw them eat buckets of like, candy that are, like, still wrapped in bottle, and they ate the whole thing. Yeah. And, it was, it was heartbroke, heartbreaking to see."

Ho Loy is the boss of Lantau Buffalo Association.

Ho Loy:"Many of the cow you can see that they have like a strange, swollen stomach, which mean they have a certain amount of plastic in their, in their digestion system already."

Lantau Buffalo Association talks to visitors too. It tells them: Don't leave rubbish on the island.
