Madrid hit by Storm Filomena - B1

Snow in Madrid - 15th January 2021

Snowstorms in Spain have caused big problems across the country. 4 people have died.

Madrid hasn't had this much snow since 1971. The snowfall was caused by storm Filomena. The Spanish weather agency has called the storm "historic".

The snow affected the city's transport. The airport and many roads were closed. The rail network cancelled all trains.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez asked everyone to stay inside. But many left their homes to play in the snow.

Covadonga Solares: "I live nearby and we decided to come here because we thought we had to see this. It's great! We're so excited and there's also such a good atmosphere. You see people having fun and I really - maybe I'm a bit too sensitive, I think it's moving, the mood is happy. It's nice, really."

These people went skiing around Madrid. Other people built snowmen.

The snow also fell across central and eastern Spain.

The government hopes to clear the snow before the weather gets colder.
