Pub joins Buckingham Palace on Grade I list - 19th February 2020

The Philharmonic Dining rooms is an English pub. It's a well-known place in Liverpool. It's also where the Beatles used to drink. Now, it's the first Victorian pub to be put on the Grade One list of historic buildings.

It's called 'The Phil' by locals and was built in 1898. The architect, Walter W Thomas, designed its high, stone walls. The rooms feature stained glass windows and elegant decoration.

'The Phil' opened as a men-only dining room. It is located opposite the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall. The Phil's toilets are very impressive.

The Beatles' success made John Lennon very famous. It meant he couldn't drink in the Phil. Now the Phil is famous. Its Grade One status places it on the same list as Buckingham Palace.

Eamon Lavin manages the pub. Eamon Lavin: "It's pretty rare to get a public venue, where you can walk into a venue, and see a Grade One listed status. Most venues you would go into, you have to walk around or you can't sit down, whereas in here you can just sit down and take in the architecture."
