Dragon returns to city - 15th June 2022
This historic festival's happening in the Belgian city of Mons. The dragon's killed by St George, who saves the town. This is part of the UNESCO list of historic cultural events.
The festival's called the Ducasse de Mons, but local people call it the 'Doudou'. The celebrations last for a whole weekend.
The fight between St George and the dragon is carefully planned. The pair circle each other for 30 minutes. The dragon's carried by 8 'leaf men' and 11 'white men'. Friends of St George fight off devils.
The actors are all people from Mons, and from all different jobs. They take the 700 year old festival very seriously. Practice happens all year round, and it often takes years to be chosen for the festival.
The huge audience is also part of the action. They try to grab the dragon's hair and tail.
The show ends when St George beats the dragon. He injures it with his sword, then kills it with his gun.
Finally, the people of Mons celebrate that they're safe.
