Camel gets new false leg - 11th August 2025
This camel in Pakistan is learning to walk again. The animal, Cammie, only has three legs. An angry farmer cut one leg off after Cammie went into his field.
Cammie became famous on social media. Then the government moved her to Karachi. They put her in a centre for sick animals.
Vets and nurses looked after Cammie. But the main problem was her mental health. She was worried and stressed. Sheema Khan's the centre manager.
Sheema Khan: "The main challenge for us was to treat her mental trauma. At first she was afraid of men being near her. She used to scream whenever someone wearing shalwar kameez tried to get close to her. I cannot tell you in words how much she screamed."
Cammie sat down for five months. Then the team let her meet another camel, Callie. For the first time, Cammie stood up onto her three legs.
Dr Babar Hussain is the vet at the animal home. He asked a US company to prepare a false leg. After that, the team helped Cammie use it.
Dr Babar Hussain, senior vet: "We don't force her to walk. We wait for about 15 to 20 minutes after attaching the prosthetic leg. She stands up by herself and walks slowly."
Cammie's the first large animal to receive a false leg in Pakistan. Seeing her walk again made Sheema cry.
Sheema Khan: "I started weeping when I saw her walking with the prosthetic leg. It was a dream come true. Everyone here is happy now."
Cammie will stay at the home. There, the team will always be ready to help.
