Amazon tribe in danger - 6th October 2025
People are worried about the Mashco Piro people in Peru. This Amazonian tribe usually lives apart from other groups. This is because they want to continue their own way of life. It also means that everyday illnesses can make them extremely ill.
Now, some of the tribe have visited Nueva Oceania, which is a nearby village. People from the Yine tribe live there. Nueva Oceania's president, Enrique AƱez, spoke to the Associated Press. He's worried about the Mashco Piro. A logging company has started cutting paths through the rainforest and cutting down trees.
A year ago, two loggers were killed by the tribe. They'd entered the tribe's land. But now the company, Maderera Canales Tahuamanu, has restarted work.
Survival International helps tribal peoples. It's worried that the company's activity could cause problems. Contact with loggers could make Mashco Piro people very sick. Teresa Mayo works for Survival International. She thinks that there could be fighting.
Maderera Canales has a logging licence from Peru's government. But Mashco Piro land is part of a territorial reserve, which should stop damage to the forest.
The Associated Press asked how the government is helping the tribe. It said that it's increased territorial reserves and spending to keep tribal groups safe.
