Day of the Dead Barbie - B1

Mexican holiday gets Barbie doll - 30th October 2020

Mexico celebrates the Day of the Dead every year. On 2nd November, people visit their dead relatives. They bring flowers to their graves. They offer them their favourite food and drink. The celebration always includes sweets and decorations of skulls and skeletons.

Now, Barbie has produced a Day of the Dead Barbie doll.

Zoila Muntané collects Barbies. She's very pleased. The doll was designed by someone whose family is Mexican.

Carlos Sandoval also collects toys. He's pleased that Barbie has produced a doll for this important celebration.

Other people are less excited, says sociologist Roberto Alvarez Manzo. They think Barbie is using Mexican culture to make profits.

But everyone agrees on one thing. The Day of the Dead is extremely important. UNESCO has listed it as a world cultural event. It is one of the world's important traditions.
