Venezuela twin earthquakes - B1

Venezuela earthquake disaster - 6th July 2026

Two enormous earthquakes have hit northern Venezuela. The first earthquake registered a 7.2 magnitude. The second earthquake's the strongest in Venezuela for over 100 years. It registered a 7.5 magnitude.

Scientists have analysed satellite images of the disaster area. They estimate that the earthquakes have destroyed or damaged 58,870 buildings. This has made thousands of people homeless.

Over 2,600 people have died in the disaster. Thousands more people are still missing. The final number of dead could increase to over 10,000. Part of this is because government help has been slow to arrive.

The first three days after an earthquake are vital. It's called the golden window. It provides the best chance of saving people who are stuck under buildings. But many areas have received no government support.

Friends and neighbours are saving people themselves. They're digging and lifting concrete by hand. They don't have any rescue equipment.

3,681 rescue workers have travelled to Venezuela from 30 countries. The country's also received 1,086 tonnes of essential supplies. The USA's promised Venezuela $300 million in financial aid.

Venezuela's political situation makes things worse. Rescue services and equipment aren't effective. Its government's under pressure from the USA. Now, this disaster will affect its future too.
