Barcelona gets tallest church - 20th April 2026
Barcelona now has the world's tallest church. Its name is the Sagrada Familia. Its main tower is 172.5 metres high. Builders finished the tower with a big cross.
Famous artist Antoni Gaudí designed the church. Building work started in 1882. It still isn't finished.
Gaudí's design uses different artistic styles. It mixes Gothic and Art Nouveau styles together.
The church is popular with tourists. Over four million people visit it every year.
The church had lots of construction problems. Wars and pandemics stopped construction. Sometimes, there wasn't enough money.
Now, the church is 80 percent complete. Jordi Faulí manages the project.
Jordi Faulí: "But perhaps we can say that with the placement of the cross, we will be almost 80 percent through the whole construction."
The next construction problem is the main entrance. The design has a big square and lots of stairs.
But there isn't enough space. There are apartment blocks on the land. 10,000 people live in them. There are 50 businesses in them too.
The local government has to make some decisions. Can they build the church's main entrance? If they build it, who will pay for the land? What about the people in the apartments? Where will they go?
