Fairy tale of Wrexham football club - 12th May 2023 View All
Two years ago, two Hollywood film stars bought a small football club. The club wasn't in the USA. It was in Wrexham, Wales. Actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney are the owners.
And the club just won an important competition - the National League. For local people, it's wonderful news.
Stephen Hughes is a Wrexham fan.
Stephen Hughes: "So, I think people were a little bit suspicious, maybe, that it would be a Hollywood plaything. But I think the past few years have proved to the fans that these guys are serious, it's a long time project. And, in old fashioned language, they've been bitten by the bug. In more modern language, they get it."
Reynolds and McElhenney bought the club in 2021. They then put £10 million into it. They used their own money. They got a new manager.
The two actors often go to the matches. Reynolds bought a house near Wrexham.
The stars watched Wrexham win the National League. Now, the club can play in the English Football League.
Fans are very happy.
Darryl Farrald: "It means the world to me. I've been supporting them since 1974, and as you can see, the younger generation are going to see the times that I've seen."
For Tracey Jones, it's because of 'Ryan and Rob'. She's so excited.
Tracey Jones: "When the rumours first came out a couple of years ago that they were taking over the town and the football club, nobody ever dared to believe that it was true. But, you look at it now, you wouldn't imagine it. And what's the thing? What's possible in four to five years time? Premier League? Who knows."
The Wrexham club story is now a Disney Documentary series. Perhaps it will become a movie too!
