Twin trouble in Sri Lanka! 5th February 2020 View All
Twins in Sri Lanka have attempted to set a new world record. However, their efforts may be unsuccessful because of organisational problems.
The organisers, the Sri Lanka Twins group, hired a sports stadium and invited twins to come to the capital, Colombo. They came from all over the island to break the World Record for the number of twins, triplets and quadruplets in one place. Currently, the record is held by Taiwan, where 3,961 pairs of twins, 37 sets of triplets and 4 sets of quadruplets came together in 1999.
However, the Sri Lankan event's success led to problems. These may see the record attempt fail. Higher numbers than expected arrived at the stadium. They faced long queues to register and show their birth certificates.
The problems meant organisers couldn't meet the strict record attempt guidelines. The Guinness Book of Records requires all those registered to be in the stadium together for at least 5 minutes. They also have to pose for a group photograph.
Organisers now have to wait for a decision from the Guinness Book of Records. If the attempt has failed, organisers say they will try again.
