The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have shocked the world. Harry and Meghan are ending their roles as "senior" members of the British Royal Family.

They issued the statement without discussing it with the Royal Family. They are said to be "hurt" by Harry and Meghan's decision and the surprise announcement. Buckingham Palace had not expected the news and were involved in discussions with Harry and Meghan on future roles.

The announcement displays the big gap between the Royal Family and the Sussexes, who took the decision "after many months of reflection and internal discussions". They plan to be "members of the Royal Family with financial independence". They are going to spend half the year in North America.
