Case Dominique, a safe space - 5th June 2023
In the Republic of the Congo, there's a school called Case Dominique. This school's helping students with autism and changing negative opinions.
There are 350 students with autism studying at Case Dominique. Not all people with autism have learning difficulties. But, some individuals require extra support during their education. Case Dominique provides that for these students.
Autism has different effects for each person with the disorder. Some people find communication difficult and become anxious or upset in unfamiliar situations. But each person's experience with autism is as unique as they are.
Case Dominique encourages students with and without autism to get to know one another. They attend the same classes together, which is important for teacher Dudal Ndolo. He says some families are unkind to their autistic children.
The school has helped Edith to improve her communication. Edith couldn't communicate until she was three years old. She also had difficulties at her last school.
Some people think autism comes from black magic. These negative beliefs cause problems. Some families reject their children. Sister Louvouandou's a nun at the school. She helps to educate people about autism.
Life's still tough for autistic children. But, Case Dominique provides a safe space for autistic children to learn.
