Kidney transplant - 12th September 2022
DJ Ace wants people to talk about organ donation. His kidney failed in 2018 and he needed a new one. He had to wait three years to find a donor. But this isn't the same for white patients. They can get a new kidney in a year. Patients like DJ Ace from Black or Asian communities have a longer wait. This is because of cultural and educational differences. DJ Ace's mother didn't trust organ donation. This is very common in her community.
Some organs are donated after people die. A kidney donor can be alive and healthy. The donor has to have the same blood type as the patient and the same ethnicity. Naomi Thomas learned about live donations. She decided to be a donor through the African Caribbean Leukaemia Trust (ACLT). Naomi donated a kidney to DJ Ace because their blood type matched.
DJ Ace is famous and he wants to show people that kidney donation is safe and saves lives.
