Laziness day - 21st October 2022
In Colombia, there's a special day to be lazy. They take their beds outside and do nothing for the day.
Marlon Ocampo thinks laziness is important.
Marlon Ocampo: "The day of laziness is to show that not everything in life is work. There are moments to rest, to lie in bed and do nothing, that is the day of laziness."
Laziness Day started in 1985. Carlos Montoya and his friends started it after an arts festival. They wanted some time to be quiet and make art. Carlos says that we need laziness.
Carlos Montoya: "Laziness is the engine of progress. When you are too lazy to cook, you go to a restaurant. When you are too lazy to wash, you buy a washing machine. When you are too lazy to organise the house, you hire someone. So, the world day of laziness is the engine of today's economy."
Most people do nothing on Laziness Day. But some people work. They help make beds and help people have fun. People are lazy in different ways. Some families get comfortable outside with their blankets and pillows. They watch others sing and dance.
Fernando Duque is an organiser. He says that laziness helps people have new ideas.
Fernando Duque: "Historically, it is known that the great thinkers made their wonders in their leisure time. And that is precisely what we invite people to do, to engage in laziness with us and to creatively manifest the possibility of meeting us on a very nice day."
Laziness Day is about slow living. Organisers want us to be quiet and not worry. Slow living is popular in Europe too.
