Boris Johnson is the British prime minister. He told the world about Prince Philip's death.

Boris Johnson: "It was with great sadness that a short time ago I received word from Buckingham Palace that His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh has passed away at the age of 99. Prince Philip earned the affection of generations here in the United Kingdom, across the Commonwealth and around the world."

Lots of British people went onto the streets. They were sad about Prince Philip.

Diana: "You're not seeing it now but I was in floods of tears earlier and I just, I can't really imagine the monarchy without him."

Prince Philip was born in Corfu, Greece. He was a Greek prince. But he went to school in the UK.

Philip met Princess Elizabeth. They married in 1947. Five years later, Princess Elizabeth became Queen. Prince Philip wasn't king. He was Duke of Edinburgh. He helped the Queen.

Peter: "I know he was a good man. He was controversial now and again, and said a few things out of turn, but he's been with the Queen over 70 years, longest consort that's ever been, and God, God rest his soul."

Prince Philip was 99 years old. He died two months before his 100th birthday. People in the UK showed their sadness. British flags flew at half mast. The church bells rang 99 times at Westminster Abbey.
