Talks to give back Ethiopian treasure - 19th October 2020
In 1868, the British army stole a lot of Ethiopian treasure. The treasure is kept in UK museums. Now, the Victoria & Albert Museum (V&A) has started talks with the Ethiopian government. They might return the treasure.
British museums have lots of different kinds of Ethiopian treasure. They have a gold crown and a royal wedding dress.
In 2007, Ethiopia asked lots of different museums to return the objects. But the UK government wants to keep the treasure.
Tim Reeve is a manager at the V&A museum in London. He says the V&A knows that the British didn't borrow the treasure. The museum tells visitors that the objects were stolen.
The museum is now talking with the Ethiopian government. They are trying to decide how to return some of the treasure. The British government says museums can't give objects back.
The V&A has a solution to this problem. Ethiopia could borrow the objects for a period of time. The Ethiopian government likes this idea.
