Foreign journalist dies in Ukraine - 24th May 2023

For many journalists, their work is more than just a job. Being a journalist is more like a duty - a duty to tell the truth. To show people what's really happening, journalists often face danger.

Arman Soldin was a journalist who worked in a war zone for Agence France-Press (AFP). He was one of the first TV journalists in Ukraine after the war began. "He wanted to see the truth," his mother explained.

Soldin died looking for the truth. On the 9th May, his team was caught in an attack near Bakhmut, east Ukraine. Soldin was the only team member who was killed.

At least 11 journalists have now lost their lives during this war.

Across the world in AFP offices, friends and colleagues were silent for one minute. It was a way to show respect for Soldin.

Phil Chetwynd: "I think just what emerges from that is just a simply wonderful human being, an unbelievably dedicated journalist who believed his work could make the world a better place. He was in Ukraine because he believed in that and I think it's incredibly important that we remember that and honour that."

The 32 year-old was Bosnian but was a French citizen. Now, Soldin's death will be looked at by French experts in war crimes.

Most of the video in this piece was filmed while Soldin was reporting from Ukraine.
