Americans attack Congress - 13 January 2021

On 6th January, the United States Congress counts the votes for the new president. It is an old tradition. Nothing ever goes wrong. This year was different.

The next US president is Joe Biden. President Trump wants to change this. Trump calls the vote fake. But this is not true.

Trump: "We will never give up, we will never concede. It doesn't happen, you don't concede when there's theft involved."

Trump had a big meeting outside. He told people to go to the Capitol. The Capitol is the US Congress building. Some people wanted to fight.

The Capitol didn't have enough police. People broke doors and windows. They went into the building.

Senators and representatives were inside. Police took them away. Then, people got into the Senate, the House and private offices.

People stole cameras from reporters. They hurt 60 police. Five people died. One was a policeman.

Extra police came to the Capitol. They stopped Trump's group. Then, Congress finished counting the votes.

Vice President Mike Pence spoke to Congress.

Pence: "Today was a dark day in the history of the United States Capitol. But thanks to the swift efforts of US Capitol police, federal, state and local law enforcement, the violence was quelled."

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, spoke too.

Pelosi: "Today, a shameful assault was made on our democracy. It cannot, however, deter us from our responsibility to validate the election of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris."
