Good AI, bad AI - 5th April 2023
There's a lot of excitement about the possibilities of artificial intelligence (AI). But one San Francisco museum's looking at the dangers of AI too. There's an exhibition about an AI future. Museum worker Audrey Kim wants people to think.
Audrey Kim: "For this space, it's really trying to create a means for people to approach the tech and reflect on it and see it at different angles. I also think it's, you know, it's really, it is a really, it's a really amazing technology. It's also really terrifying. It, it, it has potential for both good and bad. And so I want to create a space where we can be in a mindspace to be open to both."
Famous technology developers Elon Musk and Steve Wozniak are worried about the risks of AI. They've asked AI companies to pause AI development for 6 months.
The 'Pause Giant AI Experiments' open letter was organised by the Future of Life Institute. It asks AI companies to make some rules for AI. This is to guarantee safe use of AI. The use of advanced AI technologies needs better security.
Yoshua Bengio's from the University of Montreal. He said that AI's "smart enough that they can be used in ways that are dangerous for society."
Audrey Kim's exhibition looks at a world where AI takes over. It shows the negative effects on human society.
Audrey Kim: "It is in a post-apocalyptic world where an artificial general intelligence, AGI, has already destroyed most of humanity, and has realised that that was bad, and then created this space as a type of memorial for the humans. So, our tagline is 'Sorry for killing most of humanity.'"
Many of us use AI in our daily lives. It's in apps and our computers. Kim would like us to think about both the advantages and disadvantages of AI technology.
