The YouTube Village - 17th September 2021

Kasegeran is a poor farming village in Indonesia. But now it's famous for its YouTube stars. Siswanto started it. He's a 38-year-old motor mechanic.

One day Siswanto was repairing an expensive motorbike. But it was difficult. So he watched an online video for help. But the video was hard to understand. Siswanto had an idea. He could make simple videos. They can show how to repair bikes and will be easy to understand.

At first, it was difficult. He had no money. And he had to make videos on his very old phone. But soon he became successful. Now, he has more than two million YouTube followers.

Siswanto told his village about YouTube. Then he taught some neighbours to become YouTubers.

Siswanto: "Because not everyone has the passion to be a YouTuber, so I picked 33 people whom I've trained intensively. In six months, they can make money because they have successfully monetised their YouTube channels."

Now many people in Kasegeran have their own YouTube channels.

And now, Siswanto and his village are rich and famous.

Siswanto: "This has brought a better economy, which was never expected by the local government or the elders. I hope future generations will remain comfortable living in Kasegeran because it no longer holds the title as 'the poorest village'."
