Insulin risk if no-deal Brexit - 13th November 2019
People with diabetes and insulin companies are storing extra insulin. They are worried new supplies will not come on time. They think Britain may leave the European Union without a deal.
David Burns is 37. He is a teacher in London. David needs insulin. In the UK, 3.7 million diabetics need insulin. It controls the sugar in their blood.
David: "All of these come from Switzerland, these come from Denmark, but we don't make any of this here and none of these companies that made this are British - I think the vast majority of them are Swiss."
With a no deal Brexit, border rules and health controls will change. Bringing drugs into the UK could take longer. Some people could die.
The Department of Health says it has plans for any delay. It will bring in emergency medicines by boat and plane. But David is worried.
David: "If I ran out of insulin, obviously I don't want to test this out, but I can't imagine I'd have more than a couple of months left on this planet, so I'm terrified of a no-deal Brexit."
