New record for living under water - 9th December 2024
This man's living under the sea. His name's Rüdiger Koch. The German engineer wants to break the Guinness World Record of 100 days. He hopes to live there for 120-150 days.
He's in a special building, a "SeaPod", near Panama. He's staying 11 metres under water. He's showing it's possible to live like this.
Rüdiger Koch: "So, what we are trying to do here is proving that the seas are actually a viable environment for, erm, human expansion. So, push the frontier."
Koch and his team built this special pod. They say it's good for the environment. Fish and other animals can live on the outside. Their company, Ocean Builders, designed it. The other team members stay above water in another round pod. They think people could live like this in future.
Rüdiger Koch: "Moving out that that the, to the ocean is is is something we should do as a species. So there should be many people living out in the ocean, not just myself and a few others. So, umm, that would be actually a contribution to restore things like reefs."
During these months, Koch cannot come above water. He'd like to swim, outside his room. The team's working on it. They might build a special window. It could let Koch out to swim.
Koch's underwater life started on 26th September. If everything goes well, he'll come out on 24th January 2025.
