Breaking at the Olympics - 31st May 2023

Breaking's an American dance style. It was born from 1970s hip hop culture in the US. For the first time, it'll be an official event at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Breakdancers are called B-boys or B-girls. African breakdancers are competing to go to the Olympics. They went to the first African Breaking Competition in Morocco.

South Africa's B-girl Courtnaé Paul was one of the top dancers in the competition.

Courtnaé Paul: "This is my first time in Morocco. I'm very excited to be here. I've been on the WDSF journey for the last three years. I've won my nationals twice. I went to Seoul to compete, I just came back from Japan. So, this is a really big one for me and yeah, I am hoping to bring it home."

Breaking is a fun and energetic dance style. It mixes acrobatics, fancy footwork and powerful movements. It began with hip hop music. But now, it includes various types of music like jazz, disco and electro. In competitions, two B-boys or B-girls compete against each other with their dance moves.

For many dancers, it's not just a competition, it's about creating a community. They're excited to meet other breakers.

JC Kanane's a B-boy from the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

JC Kanane: "To meet dancers from different countries is already a good thing, because there are competitors from Angola, the Ivory Coast, Morocco, Algeria and Nigeria. So we meet here, we're united. It also allows us to get to know each other as dancers and it creates a union between us as a community. So, for me it's a pleasure to be here."

Let's see who'll win the first breaking gold medal in Paris 2024.
