AI avatars protect journalists - 30th September 2024

People in Venezuela voted for a new government. But the old president, Nicolas Maduro, is in power. Lots of people are angry. Now, journalists are in danger.

People want a new president. They went into the streets. But the police stopped them. Police put 1,400 people in prison, and 23 people are dead.

Journalists are telling people about this news. But they aren't showing their faces. They need to stay safe. They're using two digital newsreaders.

The names of these special AI avatars are 'La Chama' and 'El Pana'. This means 'the girl' and 'the dude'.

More than 100 journalists give news about Venezuela to the avatars. These writers check their facts too. This is part of Operation Retweet.

People share Operation Retweet news videos on Facebook and Instagram. Some Operation Retweet reports are in English too.

Venezuelan TV and newspapers can't report the facts. If they say bad things about Maduro's government, it'll close them.
