Lizzo says sorry - 4th July 2022
Lizzo changed the lyrics in her new song 'GRRRLS.' The word she used is a bad word for disabled people. Her fans didn't like it.
After one week on the radio, Lizzo changed the lyrics. The bad word comes from the term 'spastic diplegia.' It's a form of a brain condition called cerebral palsy. In the past, it was used to insult people. Lizzo's fans were "shocked" and "disappointed." She immediately removed the word from the song.
Lizzo said she was sorry. She wrote on social media. "As a fat black woman in America, I've had many hurtful words used against me, so I understand the power words can have."
The change was quick. Lizzo said she had to listen and do the right thing. She wants to make positive changes in the world.
Callum Stephen is an autism activist. He's proud of Lizzo's actions. Author Malorie Blackman agrees. On Twitter, Stephen wrote, "Everyone makes mistakes. What is important is how we respond to them."
