The opening of the Olympics 2020 - 28th July 2021

On Friday, the Olympic Games started in Tokyo. They are one year late. In 2020, Covid-19 stopped the Olympic Games.

People watched the Olympic Games together. But they watched on television. Covid is a big problem again in Japan. People in Japan cannot have Olympic parties. These Olympic Games are different.

Lots of people love the Olympics. They are very happy. One Olympics superfan had a Tokyo 2020 party at home.

Kyoko Ishikawa: "The top athletes and everything top things, from two, over 200 countries get, come here - wanted just come to just one city and get together, and produce the, the highest energy and power. So that's the Olympic Games."

In London, Olympics lovers watched the start too. They saw the beautiful stadium on TV. The stadium is for 68,000 people. There were only 1,000 in it.

For Anthony, the empty stadium isn't a problem. The Olympics are important. They bring countries together.

Antony Lowbridge-Ellis: "Sometimes it's a bit sort of naïve but I love the idea of the world coming together, just for four - every four years, just for, for this. It makes me feel quite, quite happy. And I think that with everything that's gone on the last couple of years, it's probably needed more than ever. So, I'm really looking forward to these Games for that reason."

One Japanese student wanted to return home for the Olympics. She could not get back. But she's happy. She can enjoy them from London.

Takako: "I'm Japanese and because of the Covid, I couldn't go back to Japan. That's why I went to see the Olympic Games on a big screen in the UK."

Tokyo 2020 is different for sportspeople. The stadium is very quiet, but millions of people around the world will watch it. This is certain.
