Looking for love at the supermarket - 16th September 2024

Could finding love be as easy as shopping for groceries? That's what some singles in Spain are hoping. They're searching for partners at Mercadona, a popular supermarket chain.

This search happens in the shop's wine aisle between 7pm and 8pm. But to take part there's something else you need to do: display a pineapple upside down in your trolley.

News website The Olive Press states that other items in your trolley provide additional information. For instance, those desiring a lifelong partner may add chocolates or sweets. On the other hand, those in search of a short romantic encounter should present a head of lettuce or another vegetable next to their pineapple.

Some people thought Mercadona could have created the trend for marketing. However, Mercadona denies this, and their staff appear bothered by the singles' behaviour. The singles hardly ever buy any of the produce in their trolleys. This creates more work for the sales assistants who tidy the store at the end of their shifts.

Gen Z and Millenials appear to enjoy supermarket dating. It provides an organic opportunity to meet someone. Dating apps remain popular, but many dislike choosing partners by swiping left or right. It can feel cold and impersonal, while meeting someone at Mercadona sounds fun and exciting.

The trend's convenient too. After all, if you're hunting for a real connection, why not go looking while doing your weekly shop?
