Earth Day 2023 - 26th April 2023

22nd April is Earth Day. In London, Extinction Rebellion and other groups walked in the streets. They want the government to listen. They want rules to save the environment.

Matthew Tulley works with Extinction Rebellion.

Matthews Tulley: "The whole thing is about influencing politicians. We've got May elections coming up fairly soon."

10,000 people joined Extinction Rebellion in London. They protested at Parliament Square.

The first Earth Day was in 1970. From then until now, we lost 70 percent of different wildlife. People at the protest wanted to remember this. They lay on the ground in silence.

Shamans in Peru met on Earth Day too. They prayed to Mother Earth. Anna Maria Simeon wants to stop nature's anger.

Ana Maria Simeon: "What we have been doing today, since we are celebrating Earth Day, is asking Mother Earth to calm her anger."

Humans are damaging the Earth. These shamans pray to the Earth. They thank the Earth.

Walter Alarcon's saying sorry to the planet.

Walter Alarcon: "We always thank the Earth because sometimes the human being is the one who deteriorates the Earth and so nature responds. That's why there are many disasters."

In London, people want the government to think about climate change.

Tarin wants more people at the protests.

Tarin: "At the end of the day we need a lot more people than this to come together and unite. I think with people rising with numbers, the government and big businesses will be forced to make some drastic decisions."
