Fire in Cape Town - 21 April 2021

This fire started on Table Mountain in Cape Town, South Africa. It moved to a university library. The library has lots of old books.

Dan Plato is Mayor of Cape Town. He is worried about the books.

Dan Plato: "On campus is more than ten fire vehicles currently. We have three buildings currently burning sporadically and, but this one is a major problem for us. It's the library with lots and lots of old ancient valuables in the library."

University students were in their rooms. They heard about the fire. They had to leave their rooms.

The fire burnt people's homes. The fire burnt this old windmill too.

Lots of firefighters are fighting the fire. Some firefighters got hurt.

These helicopters are bringing water to the firefighters. They want to stop the fire.

Table Mountain is a special place for walking. On Sunday, there were lots of walkers on the mountain. The police sent messages to the walkers on social media. The walkers need to leave the mountain.

People from Cape Town are thinking about the fire. They have a question: How did it start?

Mayor Dan Plato wants more information.

Dan Plato: "Me, I think, during the night, early tomorrow morning, we will be in a much better position to say where and how the fire have started."
