Sustainable fashion week - 22nd September 2021

Around the world, fashion shows are going live with models on catwalks. But, many aren't pleased with fast fashion culture. To celebrate Sustainable Fashion Week they have sat on chairs with their needles and thread.

They call themselves the Street Stitchers. They have gathered in front of popular fashion shops in 50 UK towns and cities and in 15 other countries, sewing old clothes.

Suzi Warren is the head of Street Stitchers.

Suzi Warren: "We're just kind of showing there is an alternative to just buying a lot of quick, cheap disposable clothes by repairing, mending and keeping things and kind of loving them back to life."

Street Stitchers is targeting the general public. They want to inspire people to mend and recycle their old clothes. They are concerned about the amount of fabric in landfills. Their intention is to demonstrate to people that they don't have to keep buying new clothes.

Street Stitcher, Madeleine Tanato wants their sewing to inspire people to start doing the same.

Madeleine Tanato: "I hope that by just seeing people stitching you know, with, you know this was my mother's you know, something that was my son's or something very simple and also being in a sort of big, busy high street can help people understand that it's not something that's beyond them."

Street Stitchers has got a website to help people who are interested. If you're new to sewing or looking to improve your skills, the website has got something for you. They've got their QR code at each site for people interested.

One pedestrian, Glo Sherman, was inspired to sew again.

Glo Sherman: "Recently I've done more of it and it's because people have reminded me that it's better to repair these things and also because there are clothes I have I really like and I don't want to get rid of them."
