Princess Diana memorial unveiled - 19th July 2021

A memorial statue to Princess Diana is now on show in London. It is located in the gardens of the princess's former home, Kensington Palace.

Her two sons, William and Harry, met with relatives to reveal the statue. They haven't appeared together since spring at the funeral of their grandfather Prince Philip, Queen Elizabeth's husband, but the brothers looked comfortable for the first time in weeks.

Harry's decision to leave the royal family in 2020 has made their relationship difficult. However, the pair put their differences aside for the event. It was the day of their mother's 60th birthday.

Princess Diana famously lost her life in a car accident in 1997. William and Harry were only 15 and 12 at the time.

There were no formal speeches in the ceremony. Only a small group of mainly family members were present, and they applauded on seeing the statue of Diana.

The princes stated, "We will remember her love, strength and character" and how she succeeded in "changing countless lives for the better".

The bronze artwork was designed by artist Ian Rank-Broadley and is now on show in Kensington Palace Gardens. It presents Diana with three small children. Her sons are hoping it will encourage palace visitors to reflect positively on their mother's life.
