Thieves steal from English castle - 14th June 2021

There has been a robbery at Arundel Castle in England. More than £1 million of historic gold and silver was stolen.

The most historic item is a gold rosary. Rosaries are used by Catholics to count prayers. This rosary used to belong to Mary Queen of Scots. She was holding it when she was killed in 1587.

The police said thieves had entered the castle through a window. They broke a glass display case and took the gold and silver items.

A castle employee told reporters that the gold rosary wasn't very expensive. He said it was valuable because of its history.

Mary Queen of Scots also hoped to be Queen of England. She had to leave Scotland and ran away to England. She wanted her cousin, Queen Elizabeth I of England, to look after her. People didn't trust Mary.

After she was killed, everything she owned was burned. People didn't want to remember her. Her rosary was the only item that was saved. Now that has disappeared.

The theft of historical objects is more common than you may think. They are often collected by wealthy people. They make secret requests to professional thieves who steal the items for them. Later on, the historical objects are usually discovered in rich people's homes.
