Social media in China - 11th June 2021

There is a new social media group in China. The group is called Fashion Grandmas. Fashion grandmas are retired Chinese women. They make videos. They post the videos on social media.

The women wear fashionable clothes in the videos. They say interesting things too. They talk about marriage, love and life. They have millions of followers in China.

There are many retired people in China. These retired people like using social media. They use it for shopping and entertainment.

Sang Xiuzhu is in the Fashion Grandma group. She is 76. But she feels young.

Sang Xiuzhu: "I think the elderly should also live the way they want and be optimistic. Don't keep thinking about how old you are. Our 'Fashion Grandma' group has a slogan: Age is just a number."

The Fashion Grandma group makes a lot of money. The money comes from pop-up advertisements. They sell things on livestreams too. Sometimes, they sell 200 things in one minute. The group has an agent to help them. The agent looks after their money.

Ruan Yaging has a video channel. She is excited about the Fashion Grandmas. We can learn a lot from retired people.

Ruan Yaqing: "The elderly nowadays are different. We are exposed to everything and will learn everything. We are not like what young people assume, that we know nothing. It's wrong - actually the elderly know everything, and can accept everything. Everyone says that I'm an influencer now."
