The world's first living robots

20th January 2020

Scientists have made the first living machines. The tiny robots can move by themselves. They are made from African frog cells.

The robots were made at a US research centre. They were designed by a supercomputer with a special program. The robots are less than 1mm long. The director, Michael Levin, said they are "entirely new lifeforms."

Two robots work very well. One moves around on two short legs. Another robot has a hole in the middle, which scientists altered so it can carry objects. They made the robots with special cells from African frogs. They put the cells together with special tools. The robots are called "Xenobots" because Xeno is part of the frog's name.

Robots are usually made from metal because it's strong. But living robots also have some advantages. They get better if they are injured. They don't need recycling when they stop working.

Xenobots have many possible future uses. These include collecting ocean microplastics, clearing dangerous chemicals, giving medicines and treating serious illnesses. They may be given simple brains and eyes. Levin says they plan to make real-size robots.

People are asking if Xenobots have rights. There are different opinions and this important question will be discussed in detail.
