AI comes top place for word of 2023 - 1st Jan 2024
Sensations English has chosen AI (Artificial Intelligence) as the word of the year, given its cultural, economic and political impact.
Initially researched in the 1950s, AI is machine or software intelligence. March 2023 saw AI become part of the current zeitgeist owing to the launch of ChatGPT 4. This virtual assistant employs deep learning, where multiple layers of programming analyse natural human-made input to formulate a response. Trained on original pieces of literature, paintings and films, AI programmes can churn out well-crafted articles, stories, films and jokes within seconds, far more efficiently than the compilers of the source material.
Following the release of ChatGPT 4, tech entrepreneurs and the likes of Elon Musk compiled a letter to developers requesting a hiatus in all giant AI experimental projects, fearing unforeseen ramifications.
Meanwhile, literally hundreds of thousands of images generated by AI have circulated on social media, primarily for entertainment purposes. Images of Tom Cruise reimagined as a Hindu monk, and Taylor Swift as a moustachioed man have been fashioned using AI.
Produced without consent, many artists object to themselves or their works being utilised, classing it as plagiarism. Isabelle Doran, Leader of the Association of Photographers said, "We need new ways of tracing content and the production of smarter laws."
Another source of concern is the financial implications of AI. Given that it can accomplish tasks usually the domain of human beings, it's a threat to professions like journalists, paralegals, market analysts and even teachers.
With some creative industries positively embracing collaboration, AI can - from one perspective - be viewed as a complementary tool. In October, Hollywood script writers, formerly striking since the summer, clinched a deal over pay and AI usage. The consensus detailed how writers could not lose pay for exploiting AI programmes such as ChatGPT, while also protecting them from being replaced.
Collaboration with AI in the workplace remains a potential minefield, however. US judges have confessed to resorting to AI when making rulings and with many elections looming in 2024, experts predict AI will exacerbate misinformation, overwhelming voters worldwide.
A blessing or a curse, the jury's still out on AI.
