Same-sex marriage in Thailand - 10th February 2025 View All

A lot of weddings are happening in this Bangkok shopping centre. It's the first day that same-sex couples can marry in Thailand.

The country's already gay-friendly but LGBTQ+ groups have worked hard for same-sex marriage. Actor, Sappanyoo "Arm" Panatkool's just got married. He can't believe today has come. The change allows people to marry the people that they love.

"So today, today, finally comes true. And we fought for it for decades. And, today is a remarkable day that, love is love. We can, we allowed to have love as a normal people."

There have been lots of changes in Thailand's political situation. So, progress to the marriage law's been slow. In 2020, young people demanded change. And political parties needed their support. That's made the change happen quicker.

1448 is the part of the Thai Civil code about marriage. It was changed to remove words like man and woman. LGBTQ+ organisations wanted 1448 couples to marry on the first day. The new rules give same-sex couples new rights. Now, they can share what they own, receive property if their partner dies and start a family.

Chayapa Rattanakewil, who's a government school teacher, is delighted. It means her partner can share her job benefits. She wants the best for her partner so this is fantastic news.

"I think now is the moment [for same-sex marriage]. Because civil servants have some benefits and we should have been allowed to use them [for our partner]. I want the best for my partner, so I'd like to share my benefits with her. It's the best kind of equality."

Thailand's only the third Asian country to allow same-sex marriage and the first in Southeast Asia.
