Paying their last respects - 21st September 2022 View All

The funeral for Queen Elizabeth II was held in London. She passed away on 8th September at 96 years old. She was the longest ruler on the British throne.

Her funeral was attended by 2,000 people, which included royalty and leaders from across the globe. The service took place at Westminster Abbey. Elizabeth was crowned Queen and married Prince Phillip at the same church.

The Royal Navy transported her coffin from the Abbey, through the streets of London, on a gun carriage. People came out to show their respect for the Queen and their support for King Charles III.

After the news of the Queen's passing, people began leaving flowers at royal parks, palaces and castles across the country. Large numbers of people from around the world stood in long queues for up to 24 hours to pay their last respects.

Many camped for days along the funeral path hoping for the best view. Theresa Simons spent two nights camping.

Theresa Simons: "Why wouldn't we want to see her? She was our Queen. She did a lot for our country. She did a lot for the world, I think. Um yeah - a nice place to be. It's just to pay our respects."

Michelle Larson and her family journeyed from the US to pay their respects.

Michelle Larson: "We wanted to come over here and pay respects to the Queen. And, and - so we booked it and, and we're here until Thursday."

Michelle Larson: "And so, I think it's a testament to her character and her longevity. And I think also like - it's special to be here and experience this with her people and with the British people."

The Queen's lived a long life, but now she's laid to rest next to her husband, Prince Phillip, at Windsor Castle.
