Qatar's men's World Cup - 23rd November 2022 View All

Qatar is hosting the men's World Cup. However, there have been different opinions about Qatar hosting the event. Some people believe Qatar paid FIFA to be the host. Others say Qatar's guilty of human rights abuses.

Migrant workers constructed the buildings for Qatar's World Cup. Many of these workers died on the job. This has angered human rights organisations, who've accused Qatar of slavery.

Outside the Qatari Embassy in London, people protested against human rights abuses in Qatar. They're demanding equal rights for migrant workers, women and LGBTQ+ communities.

Peter Tatchell believes Qatar has broken international human rights laws and shouldn't be hosting the World Cup event.

Peter Tatchell: "Hosting a major sporting event is a privilege, not a right and with privileges comes obligations including the obligation to respect the principle of universal human rights enshrined by the United Nations. Qatar is in violation of those universal human rights principles and on those grounds alone, it is unfit to host the World Cup."

Homosexuality's illegal in Qatar and can be punished by up to three years in prison. The country's laws don't support same-sex marriages or relationships. It's also illegal to show support for LGBTQ+ rights.

The international community including footballers, fans and celebrities have criticised Qatar for this. Wales, England and 5 other teams' captains had decided to wear 'One Love' armbands to show LGBTQ+ support. However, FIFA has threatened to give players yellow cards if they do. Players risk not being able to play in the World Cup. England's football team are, however, going to kneel before their matches as a sign of equality.
