Barbados takes charge - 8th December 2021 View All
A new republic was born on 30th November 2021. Barbados, which became independent from Great Britain in 1966, has removed Queen Elizabeth II as head of state.
Barbados's first president, Dame Sandra Mason, has taken office. She used sailing references to talk about the nation's future.
Dame Sandra Mason: "Vessel Republic Barbados has set sail on her maiden voyage. May she weather all storms and land our country and citizens safely on the horizons and shores which are ahead of us."
Prince Charles noted the country's historic achievements and the pathway they have created.
Prince Charles: "The creation of this republic offers a new beginning. But it also marks a point on a continuum. A milestone on the long road you have not only travelled, but which you have built."
A new pledge to serve the republic was taken by members of parliament. Barbadian Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley focused on the challenge ahead. She said systems need time to change, and how they changed was everyone's responsibility.
Mia Amor Mottley: "396 years of a system of government is not two years. And it is with that in mind that I am conscious that we have a responsibility as of December 1st, tomorrow, to ensure that our nation moves as one."
People celebrated 1st December as the island's new Independence Day.
The prime minister presented music sensation Rihanna, who is Barbados's most successful citizen, with the country's National Hero award.
Rihanna: "I have travelled the world and received several awards and recognitions, but nothing, nothing compares to being recognized in the soil that you grew in."
This recognition will hopefully energise young Barbadians. They can also create success for themselves and the new republic.
