Farmers start school - 29th January 2021 View All
Indian farmers have started a school in New Delhi.
The school is for poor children in the area. Very few of them have ever been to a school before.
Over 60 children now go to the school. The youngest student is 3 years old and the oldest is 13.
Many of the children look for old bottles to recycle. They can get money for this, which helps them buy food.
The school is open between 11am and 2pm. Five teachers help the children with reading, writing and other skills. English is also a popular lesson.
The farmers give the children books, paper and pens to help with their studies. Homeless children can stay in the school overnight.
The farmers are in New Delhi to protest a change in the law. Farmers can now sell their produce in the free market instead of government markets. The farmers are worried that this change will make them poorer. They are worried that big businesses will buy all the small farming businesses.
