Harris makes history - 19th August 2020 View All
In the US, Kamala Harris has been announced as the Democratic party candidate for vice president alongside Joe Biden, who's running for the presidency.
Harris is of Jamaican and Indian heritage and would be the first African American, Indian American or woman to be vice president should she win.
Joe Biden: "And this morning all across the nation, little girls woke up, especially little black and brown girls, who so often feel overlooked and undervalued in their communities. But today, today just maybe they're seeing themselves for the first time in a new way as the stuff of president and vice presidents."
Harris is used to firsts, being the first African American, first woman, and first Asian American to be elected attorney general of California.
She also became the first Indian American and only the second African American woman to serve as a senator.
Having initially announced her own candidacy for the American presidency in January 2019, she later withdrew and endorsed Joe Biden's campaign.
Harris: "This is a moment of real consequence for America. Everything we care about, our economy, our health, our children, the kind of country we live in, it's all on the line."
The US elections are scheduled to take place in November 2020.
